It's been a while since I completed a restaurant review, I don't get out much anymore with work and school consuming my free time but I managed to crawl out of my cave to explore this little cafe situated across from European Street Cafe on Park street. Cafe Freda offers a variety of unique, mid-priced items influenced by flavors all over the world. They are vegetarian and vegan friendly offering grilled or fried tofu with many of the entrees.
We started off with Thai Veggie Spring rolls (also comes in chicken variety) which was a refreshing blend of rice noodles, carrots, cucumbers, and mint leaves paired with an Asian dipping sauce. I was informed by our waitress that these rolls where made fresh every morning and you could certainly tell in the quality of the appetizer, I found them to be very refreshing and light. The Asian sauce (which I'm guessing was soy based) was very delicious and vital in bringing that added flavor to the rolls.
For my entree I decided on the vegetable curry topped with fried tofu. The curry was a medley of peas, slivered almonds, carrots, cauliflower, and jasmine rice topped with a mango chutney and surrounded by a mild yellow curry sauce. This meal was my definition of ultimate comfort food. The savory curry sauce mixed with hearty vegetables and the slight sweetness and tang from the chutney was the perfect combo for a cold and windy day. The vegetables were so good I wouldn't bother adding on the tofu next time because it didn't even compare to the tastiness of the curry. My only complaint is that I almost wish the curry was slightly more powerful in flavor but I am a curry fanatic, so that is a personal preference.
My friend ordered the special which was a buffalo shrimp po boy with shredded lettuce and blue cheese and an added side of made in house mac n' cheese. The sandwich was good, the bread was nice and crispy and the shrimp were well seasoned, but they did have a slight freezer taste to them. My friend wanted more cheese and the waitress happily gave her an added side for no charge. The macaroni and cheese was the everything you expected from this cheesy classic, it had massive flavor with all the stringy cheesy goodness.
Cafe Freda was a nice addition to this area. It's friendly staff and unique worldly cuisine offer many options for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Whether you're in the mood for a classic cheeseburger or something more exotic, this cafe is sure to please.
